We mourn the passing of William A. Cotter Jr. (June 7, 1934 - March 8, 2008). Bill was a dear friend, wise counselor, valued colleague and generous mentor.
Bill Cotter was nationally recognized as an expert on professional liability, D&O and was counsel to large insurance carriers. He handled numerous high profile cases for such companies as American International Group (AIG), CIGNA and Chubb.
Mr. Cotter was considered an authority on Claims Made Policies, and lectured and ran seminars on liability and protection for directors and officers. Mr. Cotter worked with underwriters to revise policy and draft endorsements in both unique and general application situations. He was directly involved in cases with exposure over $500,000, and often negotiated pre-suit settlements between carrier and insured and/or claimants. He was designated arbitrator on two multi-million dollar disputes for National Union.
Mr. Cotter served on a special AIG committee to assure effective uniform treatment on a national basis of claims by the FDIC/Resolution Trust against Directors and Officers, attorneys, accountants and others, arising out of the collapse of banks that took place in the late 1980's.
